This show smokes through and through. You can tell the boys are feeling it. First set highlights for me include a beautiful Althea and an extremely energetic
...
Cassidy. Second set speaks for itself. Brent adds so much here. Tunes that could have become stale like China Cat are revitalized by his playing. RIP.
This recording is good and I enjoy the crowd noise but it sounds very metallic to me. A lot of high pitch sounds that make parts hard to listen to. I prefer the Miller.

Subject: Ahhh.... Mock Turtle Jam
Gosh, that jam just makes me smile out loud every time I hear it starting up on my big ol' Grateful Dead digital jukebox. Drummerz having a BLAST, listening
...
to each other, and driving the vibe, Phil just going to town, Brent sprouts two more hands in the middle there, while Bobby and Jerry just feed off each other. Just freaking HUGE. Crowd is in pure bliss as some of the tightest jamming is months is happening right there for them. I bet everyone was having an, "Is this going to end up a new road-built song?" moment.
Glad this recording caught the Drums, as our Rhythm Devils were clearly ready to bring the curtain down on a composition that started 22 minutes ago. Tape flips happen, whatcha gon' do?
Then I get teary again for Brent's most beautiful "I Will Take You Home," and then good gods have mercy, I'm utterly shocked to find myself honestly emotionally involved with August West for the very first time in my life, and well and truly so full of August's romantic righteousness, that the move into "Throwing Stones" seems perfectly right, and it all comes kicking out. There I am howling out loud with Bobby, "We are on our own." Not even a full moon tonight. Having been at DAR Constitution Hall on 08/17/95 with the Deadhead brother that got ME into the Dead in the 80s, those lines are sorta poignant to me. This version of the song is enormous, and the AUD recording is so good there is tons of headroom for that 7:30 assault of hard, deep lows.

But not great by far. This source is decent, but it leaves much to be desired. I'm not sure why the Charlie Miller SBD is still down; Terrapin Limited
...
was specifically a limited edition release, like the Dave's Picks series, and all of those boards are still up. Price gougers on eBay are asking $70 - $100 for this set. What a rip off.

Subject: Very Good AUD
In contrast with the LaPorte AUD available for this show, this(Nak300) is a more clean source. The crowd noise only pops up in select places, and the instrument/vocal
...
levels are very good. It lacks the power of the LaPorte source, though if you are after a more clean, even ended AUD, LaPorte is not for you.
The Hubbard AUD for this show is also on the opposite side of the tracks from the LaPorte source. It separates from this Nak300 source in that it is a bit more crisp and the instrument tones haven't lost as much of their biting edge as they have in this source. So while this is a very strong source, I would strongly recommend going with the Hubbard AUD if you are not looking for the big AUD style of the LaPorte.
With all the reviews already up on this AUD I don't really need to... But, for good measure, yes, this show is sprints up to the edge of the cliff and jumps off, sans parachute, without a 2nd thought. Everyone knows about the Terrapin, and it is one of the best, but here it is just one portion of an all together epic concert. Show is a full 5/5.

what everyone has already said, but why not?
This is one great show from the great spring of 1990. Many great versions, from Althea and, yes, Walking ... Blues, to Wharf Rat and Throwing Stones and the sweet, if ragged (lyric-wise), Revolution.
The creme de la creme, though, is the Tereapin and the jam afterward. Proof that in their 25th year this band was capable of spontaneously pulling out a jam as transcendentally gorgeous and original as anything they, or anyone else, has ever played. Listen good...this is some beautiful music. Everyone shines on this one, and there are beautiful sounds everywhere.
The second part of Drums, the track between drums And space on the "official" release, is also phenomenal.
Hard to compare this to something like Fillmore West run of 1969--apples and oranges. This deserves five stars on its own merit.

Subject: Best Rider ever?
Subject: Best Rider ever?
This has got to be one the greatest Rider's ever performed. There is certainly a reason why this show was picked by Phil for the Terrapin cd. It is arguably
...
the greatest show of the almost unbelievably strong Spring 1990 run. Find me a better Terrapin, a better type II jam (after 1981), a lovelier and more powerful Wharf Rat, or more bubbly and smokin' Samson. Bet you'd be hard-pressed.
I was so very lucky to see the band 86 times and this was the second best set I ever saw after the legendary formerly the Warlocks 1989-10-09 Dark Star, Death Don't, Attics set. This set and show are a very close second. The recording is quite good and since Garcia's guitar and voice are a bit low in the official release, I'll take this one over that one in a pinch.
They were pure magic at the Cap Center that spring and the magic never let up until the tragic loss of Mydland. This is a stunning and wondrous look at this band at the peak of their maturity: ripe and delicious.

Have not listened to the sound yet. So this review is of the show. My first review. More of a story. I snuck into this show. Got super lucky. The tickets
...
were almost impossible to get on the lot as one could tell. My friend and I drove from Kansas to the show with many problems. Car broke down. Spent almost all our money fixing it. Decided to go on anyway. Nicknamed the run "sping broke". It was spring break from KU. Made it in a smoking car. Overheated. I had given up trying to get in. But wanted to see the light show before I left peeking through the curtains of the hall through the glass doors of the centre. As I walked toward the doors to look. Some folks dressed nice. Probably got their tickets cause the were in the Washington scene were leaving. Knew they were gonna crack the door. I slipped right in and walked in white light right past the guard cause he was to busy watching the dancers in front of him. Thank goodness. Than ran to were I thought a girl I knew might be sitting. A newspaper student out of penn state. Meet her at RFK that summer.Hi Not even close to finding her but ended up straight in the back of the centre. Had taken some boomers earlier and because I was not expecting to be inside. Had a can budweiser and half a half pint of wild turkey on me. Cracked the beer. Now security was after me. Saw the bootleg bruski. So I turned around and saw the wall in back of the stadium. I was trapped. But not in Grateful Dead land. I ran up to the last row. Got down under the legs of the people in the seats and was planning on crawling backwards all the way down the row to the other side. It was drums so most people were sitting. Underneath about four people I looked up and said the Head."I'm from Kansas,Just snuck in. There's a secruity guard after me" He said cool and covered me with his legs. I most have just disapered to that security guard. Fun stuff. He than said after a minute or two that it was cool. I stood up pulled my ponytail down, took off my jacket so the guard couln't tell it was me. Thanked my new best buddy. Shot the wild turkey and that was that. There was one seat in the very back row up agaisnt the wall just waiting for me. I will never foget. I might have been the happiest dead head there. Give or take a few. I asked what they had played. Except for Easy to Love You, it was pretty standard so I knew we were still in for a birthday treat. When They started the encore I thought it might have been Deal. Instead I was blown away with Revolution. When Jerry sang "you know it's gonna be alright" I belived it with all my heart and still to this day will always remember those words. "alright, you know it's gonna be aright" What a night. I was on top of the world. That five song set was absolutley fantastic. Can't believe it's been Twenty years. Wow. Well that is it.

The energy built up by the drums during Weir's "We are on our own" vocal section must have inspired Garcia or something. Even amongst a great year of Throwing

Stones, this jam makes it the best. When Garcia starts riffing you can hear in the intensity and true care he puts into this jam. Brent in turn is inspired by Jerry's sublime playing and busts out some sick piano riffs. Oh, and no this show does not have the best Wharf Rat (has anyone hear any shows from 5/77, I can think of about a dozen from that era that top this, musically and vocally.) still good, but not the best by any stretch.
